A new trial in which scientists will test the effectiveness of a pill called ‘Viagra’ in patients who are taking a prescription medication for erectile dysfunction, found it could improve the erectile dysfunction symptoms in one of the first studies of such a drug.
Viagra is one of the first drugs to be approved for treatment of erectile dysfunction. The drug’s maker, Pfizer, is trying to make it easier for patients to stop suffering from erectile dysfunction.
In a study, scientists in a UK-based research group in February found that a pill containing sildenafil, which is known as Viagra, could be as effective as a placebo in patients with erectile dysfunction.
A group of 11 men with erectile dysfunction, who were recruited from the men’s health service in the UK and included 19 of the participants, reported the benefits were significant. They were also using the pill as a way to help them to stop smoking. The group also were given a placebo.
The Viagra pill was prescribed as part of a treatment for erectile dysfunction and was the only one of the group’s participants to report having the erection for at least six hours after taking the pill.
In the study, men were given the pill at the same time of day and the results showed that the drug improved their erection at four to six hours after taking it. The men taking the drug had significantly faster erections.
“The Viagra pill has been proven to be very effective and was previously tested in patients with erectile dysfunction,” said lead researcher Dr. Peter Stuber, a Pfizer spokeswoman.
“The results of this trial are encouraging and, in fact, could improve treatment outcomes for men with erectile dysfunction who are taking a prescription drug for this condition.
“The drug’s safety and efficacy in patients with erectile dysfunction are currently being assessed in a similar trial, and in response to increasing awareness about erectile dysfunction, the potential benefits of treatment with Viagra have been explored in patients.”
“The results of this trial offer further evidence that Viagra is a safe and effective medication for many men, particularly in the treatment of erectile dysfunction,” said Dr. Peter Stuber, Pfizer’s head of clinical research and development.
The drug is approved by the FDA to treat erectile dysfunction in men between the ages of 18 and 64. The drug is also indicated for men with mild to moderate risk factors such as hypertension and coronary artery disease.
Pfizer, which makes Viagra, is not the first UK company to approve the drug for treating erectile dysfunction. Eli Lilly & Co Ltd, the U. S. marketer of Viagra, was among the first companies to take the drug.
The study, which involved 11,895 men, involved a group of 10,959 men taking the drug for the first time for two weeks. The men who took the drug were then randomly assigned to take either a placebo pill or the drug’s active ingredient, sildenafil. The placebo pill, which was given three times a day for seven days, was taken three times a day.
